Level 5 Smooth Finish

The Highest Grade Drywall Finish.

Highest grade drywall finish. Skim coated, sanded, and ready for paint. Built for high end residential and commercial walls.

What does level 5 actually mean?

Drywall finishes are graded in levels, and level 5 sits at the top. Where a standard finish coats only the seams and fastener heads, a level 5 finish adds a skim coat of joint compound over the entire wall, every square inch, then sands it flat. The result is one continuous surface with no difference in porosity or texture between the seams and the field of the board.

Why that matters: paint does not hide a wall, it reveals it. On a standard finish, the coated seams and the bare paper absorb paint slightly differently, and under the wrong light you can see exactly where every joint runs. A level 5 skim coat removes that difference before the primer ever goes on.

When is level 5 worth paying for?

Not every room needs it, and we will tell you when it does. These are the situations where level 5 earns its keep:

  • Critical lighting, like a long wall washed by a window or fixtures that rake light across the surface
  • Smooth wall designs with no texture to hide anything
  • Dark, bold, or glossy paint colors that exaggerate every flaw
  • High end interiors where the walls are part of the design
  • Commercial lobbies, offices, and storefronts that need to look sharp

If your walls are getting a sprayed texture instead, a standard finish is usually the right call, and our texture and spray service covers that route. Either way the estimate is free and the recommendation is honest.

How do you get a wall truly flat?

Patience and light. The skim coat goes on across the full surface, gets sanded, and then gets checked the way it will actually be seen: with light raking across it. Anything that shadows gets coated and sanded again. It is slower than a standard finish, which is exactly why it costs more and why it looks the way it does when the paint dries.

What affects the cost of a level 5 finish?

Wall area is the biggest factor, since the whole surface gets skim coated rather than just the joints. Ceiling height, the number of rooms, and whether we are finishing new drywall we hung ourselves or skimming over existing walls all play a part. We walk the space, scope it clearly, and give you the price up front at a free on site estimate.

Finished by the same crew that paints it.

A level 5 wall deserves paint applied with the same care that went into the mud. Because we handle interior painting too, the crew that skimmed and sanded your walls can prime and paint them, with no gap between trades and no finger pointing if something needs a touch up. We bring that same standard to commercial finishing projects across Eastern Oklahoma and Northwest Arkansas.

Level 5 Questions

Smooth Finish, Straight Answers.

What is a level 5 finish?
Level 5 is the highest grade drywall finish, a full skim coat over the entire surface that produces a flat, smooth wall ready for critical lighting and high end paint. It is the standard for upscale residential and commercial interiors.
When do I need level 5 instead of a standard finish?
When the wall will face critical lighting, when the paint will be dark or glossy, or when the design calls for smooth walls with no texture. Under those conditions a standard finish can show seams and shadows that a level 5 skim coat eliminates.
Do you do level 5 finishes on commercial projects?
Yes. Level 5 is built for high end residential and commercial walls, and we finish commercial interiors like offices, restaurants, and retail spaces to that standard when the project calls for it.
Is a level 5 wall ready for paint when you leave?
Yes. The surface is skim coated, sanded, and paint ready. If you want us to carry it through, our painting crew can prime and paint the same walls, so one company owns the finish from mud to final coat.
